The Sound of Silence – a Unique Silenced Ruger Speed-Six Revolver
Date of publication: 09/1999
Status: AFTE Journal-volume 31, number 4, Fall 1999
Abstract:
Silencers for revolvers are usually not very effective. They are, therefore, seldom used and so rarely encountered in ballistic laboratories. We report on a revolver with a virtually undetectable, precision tooled adaptation for a silencer. When in place on the revolver, the silencer proved efficient in reducing both the sound level and muzzle flash of the weapon.

Date of publication: 11/2003
Status: AFTE Journal-volume 35, number 1, Winter 2003

This firearm, the MAGAL, can be classified as an urban weapon, as this is the environment in which it was designed to be used. Historical aspects of the use of long-range weapons by the police are discussed. The development of the MAGAL, together with technical specifications of this new weapon, is also presented.

Proof of  Non-Lethality of Airsoft Guns
Date of publication: 05/2012
Status: AFTE Journal-volume 44, number 2, Spring 2012
Abstract:
The potential lethality of Airsoft guns, of various types and models, was tested, in order to prove their non-lethality according to Israeli law. 10 different Airsoft guns, including replicas of pistols, machine guns, assault rifles and bolt action rifles, were tested, each with two types of 6mm (0.236in.) plastic pellet: a light one, weighing 0.2 gr (3.09 grain) and a heavy one, weighing 0.43 gr (6.63 grain). The muzzle velocity for each shot was measured and the penetration energy of each pellet was calculated. Not one shot reached a level of life threatening penetration energy or even a risk of superficial injury to the skin. It was determined that shooting Airsoft guns with plastic pellets is not lethal in any way.

GRC for a Unique Personal Weapon – the M203 Grenade Launcher
Date of publication: 08/2012
Status: AFTE Journal -  volume 44, number 3, summer 2012
Abstract:
The General Rifling Characteristics (GRC), of the M203 grenade launcher (6/R/3.9-4.2mm {0.153" – 0.165"}), have been measured and are given for future use by firearms examiners. Even though it does not fall under the definition of a "small arm", the fact it is operated as a personal weapon and used in a civilian environment, makes this data very valuable.
The measurements have been taken after a search of technical literature did not reveal any information about the width of the lands and grooves of this weapon.

Gun Control - is it Really Necessary? un editted version
Date of publication:
Status:
Abstract:

Comparisons are made between the legal and demographic ownership and use of firearms between Israel and The United States with discussion pertaining to the relationship of gun control and mass casualty shooting events.  Regulatory and legal structures are described and limitations to the analysis of examples and data are highlighted. Two key differences between the nations are the diverse local approaches throughout different regions of the US and distinct legalistic definitions of gun ownership as a “right” guaranteed by law. Some "points for thought" are given, in case the legislators, in both countries, would like to put some changes in the current situation.

3D Gun Printing and its Effect on Firearms Examining
Date of publication: August, 2013
Status: Research proposal
Abstract:
3D gun printing is the "last word" in the world of gun manufacturing and a cause for a debate on its effect on Gun Control. But while people are discussing whether it is right or wrong to "print" a gun without permission or license, we, in the forensic world, need to explore its effect on our work and our ability to solve crimes committed with such a weapon.
3D guns are already a fact we can not ignore or try to block with restricting laws, so what is left is to devise ways of identifying them and connect them to crimes, they same way we did with conventional firearms.

Ballistic Microstamping – Has Our Prayer Really Been Answered?
Date of publication: April, 2014
Status: AFTE Journal - Volume 46, number 2, Spring 2014
Abstract:
Gun control laws have yielded all kinds of technical measures to help uphold them, microstamping being one of them.
While the technical aspects of microstamping and the ability to microstamp cartridge cases have been studied before, no one has tried to learn whether it can actually lower crime rates, prevent crime or whether it can be bypassed. In this paper, some of the weak points of this technology will be examined and it will be shown that it is not likely to deliver the "magic" solution that people expect.
